The River Thames, which runs 215 miles long, has provided transportation, energy to run mills, shaped trade and has added rich history to Southeast England. Now, as a way to increase environmental efforts, the River Thames will be the home of a new incineration plant which will help to turn waste into energy in London.
Capable of managing around 585,000 tonnes of residual waste each year, the new Riverside Recovery Resource plant is expected to generate up to 72MW of electricity. When operational in 2011, the plant will receive municipal solid and other non-recyclable waste at its purpose built jetty via barge. Operated by London’s largest lighterage operator, Cory Environmental, the plant will save more than 100,000 HGV road trips each year and will become one of the UK’s largest and most efficient energy recovery facilities.
Alleviating the current issue of residual waste to landfill, the facility will provide an important strategic waste management facility to assist with London’s green waste disposal.
